paint your Sofa with CeCe Caldwell's amazing chalk and clay paint!

This video tutorial was challenging, but I am very happy with the results!

We are having an excellent giveaway too!

Two quarts of CeCe Caldwell paint (your choice)

one container of Satin Finish and one container of Divinity Crackle!

See details on how to enter at the end of this post.

I used five products for this tutorial, a quart of CeCe Caldwell's Vermont Slate, approximately 3/4 quart of Traverse City Cherry, and 1/4 quart of a quart of Vintage White. I also used some Divinty Crackle and CeCe's new Satin Finish!

I used the word approximate because I didn't measure exactly...

I started with the Red and just kept adding the white until it was the color I wanted.

 

Here are some answers to the questions I have been getting about this project,

Does the fabric feel hard or scratchy?

 No, It feels like aged and cracked leather, like an old Bomber jacket and it gives when you sit on it because this paint is chalky and soft, there is no latex in it so it does not have a hard quality to it.

Does the fabric crack or rip?

Well I took this sofa to my house for a test drive and all seems to be well, I used the crackle on this because I wanted that effect, I would think that if you do get any cracks where you don't want them, you could easily add a bit more paint in that spot.

Does the color come off on your clothes? 

No, the Satin finish works as a sealer.

I wouldn't recommend waxing fabric, but I did wax the frame and loved the results!

Can you paint on leather or velvet?

I don't know... the fabric on this sofa was a heavy cotton/rayon blend.

If anyone has tried other types of fabric please let me know!

  

Here are some tips that I didn't include in the video,

Use a darker color for your first coat if you are going to crackle.

I don't like to use painters tape, instead I used a tiny paint brush to get the areas close to the frame and to get into the pin tucked areas of the sofa. I'm sure painters tape works, it just makes me crazy!

The satin finish really brought this to life, and gave this the leather effect that I was going for, without it the fabric had a really flat look.

The trickiest part of this job was getting enough  of the pink paint on without messing up the crackle,

it's important to wait for the crackle to dry completely and then put a heavy coat of your second color on. If you go back over where you have already painted it will mess up the crackle effect. If you want to add more paint in areas where there wasn't enough coverage, do it after the paint has dried.

My shop, House Vintage in the Cedros Design District

I wanted to share a few photos of my Store, I opened it 15 years ago! It keeps me running all the time!

I recently changed the name from Out of the Blue to House Vintage.

Over the last 15 years I started bringing in more and more vintage items and wanted to transition to selling only things that are vintage, handmade or both.

the only new items I sell are supplies to repurpose or make things with...

like CeCe Caldwell's amazing non toxic paint! It's made in the US,  and you can paint anything without sanding, stripping or priming!

as matter of fact I painted the front of my shop with one container of Santa Fe Turquoise!

Starfish Chandelier Tutorial

I wanted to create a light fixture that had all of the wow factor of a chandelier dripping with crystals but without the big price tag....

I used 36 white starfish and about 10 yards of crystal chain

and about 10 yards of rhinestone chain.

I have to say that every project I dream up has it's challenges and this was no exception. 

Here are some important tips I discovered along the way....

Use a small dremel if you have one, it is much easier on the delicate sea stars and you will have more control when you get to the part where you need to drill the extra holes as the starfish are hanging on the chandelier.

Lay your starfish out in a mock set up to determine how many to use and how they will hang, I used a total of 36 starfish,( 12 strands of three). six of the stands had 3inch links of chain a at the top to attach to the metal ring and the other six 1.5 inch links. I did this to stagger the starfish so they would not bang into each other or overlap too much.

Keep in mind that the bottom starfish on the strand only needs one hole but the rest of them will need two or more.

E600 is the glue I used, although it  is messy and needs to be used in a well ventilated area it works well. You can find this glue at Walmart or Michaels.

I have the rhinestone chain for sale by the yard and the spool on Etsy as well as the starfish by the dozen!

I will be adding other creative supplies too!

I am also selling the chandelier I made in this video, (there is just the one)

it took me about two days to make this!

it is has a 12 inch diameter and is approximately 21 inches long.

HGTV's White Room Challenge last night!

Last night was the premiere episode of HGTV's White Room Challenge!
I have to say I loved it!  Four Designers compete for $10,000
In this weeks show, the contestants were given 15 minutes to shop at the LA flower market and then create a room using a minimum of 1500 stems in their design.  I felt like I was right there working along with them!


 


     As you may know I would love to do just that! This is the audition video I submitted to be on next season.

              Next week the contestants go to a salvage yard!  Looks like it's gonna be another week of armchair designer for me!

New Craft Tutorial, Seashell covered ribbon and gift wrap

 Happy Friday Everybody!
This is a fun video showing how to wrap gifts with recycled paper and seashells.
The seashell covered ribbon is something I have sold in my shop for 15 years, I have made yards and yards of this pretty ribbon, it is super easy to do!
 I will have a kit for sale on Etsy with enough seashells, sheer wired ribbon and sea glass to make 10 yards. Look for it next week!

How to make Seashell covered Letters and a big giveaway!

So as I said in this video, I have made a lot of these Seashell Letters, (thousands of them). Back in 2006, I was making these letters and selling them in my shop  and they were one of my best selling items.
 I decided to send one of my Seashell Letters off to Coastal Living Magazine in 2008.
 In the November issue, Coastal Living a published a photo of my letters along with info on how to buy them from my website. well when that happened, my website was flooded with orders for them!
 It was Christmas time and I don't think many of the readers realized that the letters were handmade by one girl in a tiny 400 square foot cottage, they were expecting them to be shipped as soon as they were ordered... Well I threw myself into filling my orders as fast as I could make them.  ( keep in mind that when it comes to my work, I am a perfectionist and there was no way one letter would be shipped that wasn't just as beautiful as the ones I made to be photographed for Coastal Living....

This was an all out effort, my Mom moved in with me for about a week, to cook for me, do my laundry and run errands, my sister took over running my store for two months, a good friend who was off work with a broken leg came by to help glue on rhinestones and my Dad packed and shipped all of the orders.
I was up at five AM and glueing seashells until midnight pretty much for two months.
 The highlight of my Holiday season was my Wednesday night acting class, this was when I got to  put on makeup, leave the house and talk to other humans! Otherwise I am not ashamed to say that I did not even take time to take a shower... I wanted my customers to get their orders in time for Christmas, and they did!
Well after the Holidays were over, the orders kept coming in, I finally reached a point where I just couldn't bring myself to make another pretty Seashell Letter... so the the ones you see in my video are the last ones.... And, I am giving them away! Just watch the video to find out how you could win these letters and learn how to make your own! They a really fun to make if you don't have to make so many,
  I promise!
